What each platform is for
Platforms differ by what people came there to do. That is the primary distinction when choosing, and it is more reliable than which platform is currently discussed most. Size is the second question, and you should know the answer before you choose, because the order below is not the order most people assume.
A useful way to hold it: a platform is a compound that people enter for a reason. Some come for entertainment, some for news, some to learn, some to buy, some to talk to people they know. Content that matches the reason people came gets attention. Content that ignores it gets scrolled past regardless of quality.
Facebook suits local businesses, organisations, communities, events, longer explanations, photographs, groups and customer conversation. BrightBite uses it for party package details, customer photographs, event announcements, longer business stories and offers.
Instagram is visual first. Photographs, short video, Reels, Stories, product display, personal brands, food, fashion, travel and beauty. BrightBite uses it for close snack photography, packing video, preparation sequences, customer reviews and polls.
TikTok is short video and discovery. Entertainment, demonstration, storytelling, trends, short lessons, transformations and personality. A BrightBite video opening with "Watch us prepare one hundred snack packs for a school event" and running thirty seconds is a TikTok video before it is anything else.
LinkedIn is professional. Careers, company news, industry knowledge, results, partnerships and recruitment. BrightBite uses it to describe supplying three hundred boxes to a conference, lessons from running a food business, and vacancies.
YouTube is longer video and search. Tutorials, demonstrations, interviews, reviews and series. Someone typing "how to arrange snacks for a children's party" is on YouTube, and the video answering that will still be found in two years.
WhatsApp is direct. Order confirmation, catalogues, Status updates, support and repeat customers. BrightBite posts available packs to Status each morning, which reaches existing customers at the moment they are deciding what to eat.
X is short public conversation. Live events, news, opinion, service and quick announcements. "Abuja, which snack disappears first at your office meetings, chin chin or plantain chips?" belongs here.
How large each one actually is in Nigeria
These are advertising reach figures for Nigeria from the Digital 2026 Nigeria report, published by DataReportal in November 2025 using data from late 2025. Advertising reach is what the platforms report to advertisers. It is not a verified count of active people, and it is the best comparable figure published.
| Platform | Reach in Nigeria, adults | Share of population |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok | 47.8 million | 20.0% |
| 38.0 million | 15.9% | |
| YouTube | 30.5 million | 12.8% |
| Snapchat | 23.0 million | 9.6% |
| 13.0 million | 5.4% | |
| 10.0 million | 4.2% | |
| X | 6.95 million | 2.9% |
Three things in that table surprise most people, and all three should change how you plan. TikTok is the largest platform in Nigeria, ahead of Facebook. Instagram, which dominates the conversation about social media marketing, reaches about a fifth of TikTok's Nigerian audience and is a narrow, urban, comparatively affluent channel rather than a mass one. And Snapchat, which this course does not teach, reaches more than twice as many Nigerians as Instagram.
Snapchat is excluded from Week One for a stated reason rather than an oversight. Its Nigerian audience skews young, it has weak discovery for a business that nobody is already following, and it has no equivalent of the catalogue and enquiry mechanics that a small business needs. That reasoning is a judgement, not a finding, and if you serve a young consumer audience you should revisit it.
WhatsApp does not appear in the table. It carries no advertising, so there is no advertising reach figure to publish, and DataReportal reports none for Nigeria. Be careful here: the claim that WhatsApp dominates Nigerian small business commerce is repeated everywhere and rests on no dated survey that I could find. It is very likely true and it is not currently something you can cite.
Publishing one caption and one image to all seven platforms takes four minutes and is the clearest signal to a reader that nobody is paying attention. A vertical video cropped square, a LinkedIn post with nine hashtags, a Facebook post that says "link in bio" when Facebook allows links. Each of those tells a viewer the account is automated, and the credibility lost is not recovered by the next post.
Reach is a ceiling, not a prediction. A platform reaching 47.8 million Nigerians will not send any of them to a snack business that publishes nothing worth watching, and Instagram's 10 million includes a concentration of exactly the office administrator this business wants. The table tells you what is possible, not what is likely.
What the table does rule out is a common piece of reasoning. A manager who chooses Instagram and Facebook because they are the obvious pair, and never learns what TikTok is for, has quietly forfeited the largest audience in the country on the grounds that it did not occur to them. If you reject TikTok, reject it in writing, for a reason.
Two things about this table will date. Platform reach in Nigeria moves quickly: X was banned for 222 days between June 2021 and January 2022 and has since fallen to the smallest of the seven. In March 2026 the Nigeria Data Protection Commission publicly threatened Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X with sanctions over non-consensual images, and a bill reaching Senate public hearing on 23 July 2026 would allow the Commission to suspend platforms that fail to open a Nigerian office within thirty days. Neither has taken effect. Both are reasons to date any platform claim you make in writing, and to check the current Digital Nigeria report rather than trusting a table in a course.
A law firm asks which two platforms it should use. Which pair is the most defensible starting point, and on what basis?
BrightBite films a thirty second sequence of one hundred snack packs being assembled for a school. Where does this belong, and why?
Which statement about platform choice is sound?
Notes are kept with your account, alongside your progress and your gate claims. The lesson itself is readable without one.
